Five letters (1863-1864) written by Captain Kelly to his wife, Nannie (Nancy Ann Sloan) Kelly, while he was stationed at Kinston, Fort Fisher, and Plymouth during the time his regiment was engaged in the defense of eastern North Carolina; together with two lists (1908-1918) of members of Camp Ransom, North Carolina Division, United Confederate Veterans, containing names of members, UCV rank, date and place of birth, military organization with dates of enlistment and discharge, post offices addressed (for the most part in Lee County, N.C.), and remarks, usually dates of death. Letters include comments on the expedition against Washington, a battle at Core Creek, General Ransom, strength of Confederate forces in eastern North Carolina, reported rumors of Yankee advances on Kinston and Greenville, N.C., camp life, trouble the men were having with lice, and a quarrel between Flag Officer W.F. Lynch and Gen. W.H.C. Whiting that resulted in Confederate soldiers ejecting Confederate marines from the port of Wilmington, N.C. There are no papers dated 1865-1907.
